The smiling Buddy Bear of Malaysia (CNB 2011) |
I have yet to go hug the 143 Buddy Bears, 'ambassadors' of friendship, tolerance and peace. And I have till 15 February 2012 to do it. But I had a 'chance' encounter with them briefly on New Year's Eve recently. Though at that time they could not be hugged because they were, unfortunately, barricaded (to ensure the New Year throng does no damage!) So I need to go sometime soon for better photos than these.
Hands up, Buddy Bears! You are under arrest for being too colourful! (CNB 2011) |
Anyway, in case you don't know (and if you already know, I'm still telling you), the United Buddy Bears are 143 life-size painted fibreglass bears each representing a country recognised by the United Nations. The bears have been painted by artists of the country, and for Malaysia, Imuda had the honour to do it. He certainly painted a very, very colourful Buddy Bear, and according to him, the only 'smiling' one.
5/143 Buddy Bears & me (BB 2011) |
The United Buddy Bears, created in Germany by Eva & Klaus Herlitz and sculptor Roman Strobl, have been travelling around the world since 2003. Malaysia is the first South East Asian country these Buddy Bears are visiting. So go visit them at the main entrance to Pavilion KL to see this unique showcase of art, a 'meaningful initiative to promote multicultural tolerance and global understanding'. You can also donate to charity by 'adopting' a Buddy Bear. Care to be mummy/daddy to a Buddy?
Trivia: Jamie Oliver is daddy to his son named Buddy Bear Maurice Oliver! Oh dear! Imagine being 'Buddy Bear' when a rebellious teen, or a macho male!
