Returning to Old Haunts

Penang Road (CNB 2013)

Over the recent Raya holidays we found ourselves going back to some old haunts in Pulau Pinang. For me, some of these haunts go back to my childhood days.

Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (CNB 2013)
"They often say you should never return to the places of fondest recall because they will never be quite the same. Oftimes, it is simply because they have changed over the years but on other occasions it's because they were never in the first place quite what your mind so clearly recalls today" (Roger St Pierre).

Jalan Penang was my older siblings' and my 'playground' after school. This Penang Road was where we sometimes had our lunch (usually laksa and ... laksa) and shopped before going home. Then when B and A were children, we used to park at the Magazine Circle car park to cross Penang Road to Komtar (Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak) or Macalister Road & Dato Kramat Road to Gama. Of course Komtar was the 'happening' place then, and later became pretty rundown. We have realised that in Pulau Pinang, when a new shopping centre/mall is open, an older one is usually 'abandoned'. (Bukit Jambul Complex is another sad story, now mostly frequented by foreign workers.)

On the third day of Eid, we met up with an old friend FD at the Royal Hotel coffeehouse in Jalan Larut. This hotel was previously the Sheraton and earlier the Merlin. Here was where I saw my first Rafiee Ghani oil paintings and resolved to own at least one by the artist when I retired. Now I see that the two paintings there are not placed side by side anymore and (horrors!) one of them is slightly hidden by a lighted tree decoration.

Next door to this hotel on Macalister Road is the Penang Plaza, where at the Fima Cold Storage here, we used to do our weekly grocery shopping. We 'bumped' into our Bapa Malaysia and other Kedah royalty here sometimes. I guess they also needed to shop for groceries, eh? Anyway, today the facade and the inside of the building is so different from back then. More spruced up, maybe.

Along Jalan Magazine, B and I went into the Butik 21 to tailor some clothes. She had previously had some clothes done here before and after some disappointments with the KL and Shah Alam tailors, its back to this PP tailor. Another case of 'pi mai pi mai tang tu juga'? With M we later had tea at the Trader's Hotel (formerly Shangri-La), another old haunt along the same road.

On one of the evenings in the island, we dined at The Ship, still serving 'the best steak in town'. I probably had steaks there before, but now I am content with fish. I wonder if they still allow people to go on deck like they used to and were the waiters really wearing 'sailor' uniforms then? And as is routine, a walk along the Batu Ferringhi night market after dinner. Only this time, my feet got the better of me and I could not venture as far as the other family members did.

M and I went into the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) campus, for him to visit the School of Chemical Sciences where he had had a working stint before and for me to see the new extended library building. But it being a public holiday, there was not much life around so our visit was very brief.

Our accommodation in PP this time included the Equatorial Hotel in Bukit Jambul, where numerous USM functions were held (maybe still are). I recall the many Convocation (Chinese several course) dinners here and also the USM/Library conferences/seminars/workshops held here too. There seems to be new wings/blocks added to the hotel complex so the occupancy rate must be good.  And I'm glad they have retained/maintained their 'hanging gardens' of the Money plant.

If my memory serves me right, buildings in Georgetown used to look old. But now that it is a Unesco heritage site since 2008, many have been spruced up. But I am not so sure about all my memories of this enigmatic island, because quoting Roger St Pierre again, 'Probably the most compulsive liar you are ever going to meet is your own memory'.

Catching up with PP Friends

Spending the recent Hari Raya holidays in Pulau Pinang recently gave us the opportunity to catch up with some friends there. On the first day of Eid, after meeting up with family over a good lunch, we later had a sumptuous dinner of lamb mandi and chicken mandi, etc. at Mona's in Sungai Ara (or Ara River, if you like). Mona is the mother of B's good friends Faten and Shereen, and my younger sister R's contemporary. Thank you Faten for fulfilling the 'bidan terjun' request of dinner that night. It was most deelicious!

The next day M and I went to RB and Farouk's open house in Gelugor. RB is formerly Chief Librarian of Universiti Sains Malaysia (and so my ex-boss), and also a friend from way back (1976).

Another dear friend is FD, my older sister CY's contemporary from our Methodist Girls' School days and my work colleague at USM. On the third Eid, we made a date to meet at the Hotel Royal (formerly Sheraton) and then walk to Lorong Swatow to eat the Mee Sultan (on B's list of Penang foods to savour). I discovered that a new Food Court has replaced what used to be a few push carts in the lane.

Later in the evening we met up with our friends PQ and Dr KD at the Penang Club (established in 1868 as the Pinang Club), where we had a nice 'colonial' dinner of fish and chips, caesar salad, etc. Then they graciously invited us back to their beautiful new apartment by the sea for more after-dinner snacks and drinks.

It is always nice to be able to make time for family and friends, but sometimes there are constraints ... Such is life!

Keeping up with the Family

Selamat Hari Raya from B, me, M, A & SB
This is our first Hari Raya (and Ramadhan) without our beloved mother Mak. Being at the family home in Pulau Pinang this time of the year feels ... different. The first person we would usually 'minta ampun, minta maaf' from would be Mak, but now we have to accept the fact that she is no longer with us. We also know that Mak (and our father Ba) would want us siblings to be forever a close-knit family, although we now live in six different states.

Hari Raya is the best occasion to keep up with family. Balik kampung is synonymous with getting together with family members; we sure hope it is something that we can adhere to each year. And we know that everyone will try their darnest to come together on this joyous occasion. Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri 1434.

On the first day of Eid, we met up with my older siblings SP and MN (CY is away in England), and two younger siblings AW and AE. The rest we met up with later, except for three who could not make it back to PP.

Sabah Art Gallery

Balai Seni Lukis Sabah (CNB 2013)

The Balai Seni Lukis Sabah is now in a beautiful new octagonal building shaped like a traditional Kadazandusun  bahuyun (basket). It is Sabah's first environmentally friendly four-storey art gallery costing RM15 million. Designed by architect Lee Hon Liong, much of the building is powered by the sun, with rain water collected to flush toilets and water the lawns. Windows are kept to the minimum and the building is designed in such a way to shed much of the inside from sun rays (which reduces the amount of harmful ultra-violet rays that could destroy paintings on display). Enough natural light and fresh air is let in through an open circular roof. This Visual Arts Conservation Centre is located at Jalan Penampang, about 3km from Kota Kinabalu City Centre.

While in Sabah recently, Penel took me to visit this very new art gallery and we were thoroughly impressed, with both the building and the art works within.

The Exhibitions are held on two spacious levels, reached by a circular/curving staircase. Pameran Bakat-bakat Baharu 2013 was on then. It showcased the artworks - paintings, collages, sculptures - by the various new local artistic talents of Sabah.

Another exhibition was the Pameran Datuk Yaman dan Rakan-rakan. Datuk Yaman Ahmad Mus (1938-2012) was a great artist and the Director of the Sabah Art Gallery at the time of his demise. But he never got to visit the new gallery building due to his frail health then. This exhibition was to honour him and display his artworks. I liked his Ilusi dimensi series in acrylic. Among his rakan-rakan/friends whose works were displayed were Tina Rimmer, Datuk Hj Murshidi Nambi, Datuk Simon C. Yew, and Benedict Chong.

I'm Glad You Are My Sister

Have I ever told you
how glad I am
that you're my sister?
I'm telling you now
because I want you to know
how very important
        you are to me
and just how much love
        there is for you
             deep within my heart.
                    - Deanne Laura Gilbert

This poem is part of a longer one from the book, 'I'm Glad You Are My Sister; a Blue Mountain Arts Collection (2000), that A gave to her sister B.  Ex Libris CNB 1427.
