The Lorong Kulit Flea Market

Recently, when we went back to Pulau Pinang for the Hari Raya, we visited/revisited the new and the familiar there. The Lorong Kulit Flea Market (LKFM) is about a decade old (moved from the old site to decongest the area). It is really more than a flea market, because other than used goods and antiques (real or otherwise), you can find clothes (new and used), fruits (fresh, certainly not used), plants, and even furry or wet friends (read: pet animals). It is always a fascinating place to visit on a weekend morning, and you can really get some good bargains, even if in the end, it is only fruits!

You really have to spend some time scouring the place to find the 'gem' in the load of stuff there. Once I found some nice antique side plates similar to the ones my grandmother gave me. This time I looked for some blue and white, but did not find any that I liked.

The fruit section at one corner of the market area is really most colourful and there are lots of local and imported fruits to choose from.

Seasonal attractions are also to be found. Since Hari Raya was approaching, so many 'stars' were seen. They were really pretty handmade items, and make nice decorations for the HR celebrations.

Unidentified non-flying objects? Actually I have quite forgotten what they are.

But at the pet stalls, I always do not linger. The little creatures (rabbits. hamsters, guinea pigs, etc.) are crowded in cages which must be most uncomfortable for them.

Although the Lorong Kulit Flea Market was previously referred to as a 'thieves' market (because many stolen goods end up here), the stigma is no longer. But flea markets continue to fascinate me because some of the things you come across there are most nostalgic of the yesteryears.  So next time you are in Pulau Pinang, do visit this flea market.
