Books I Love: Dewey

I love cats, books and libraries, so this book is special to me. Dewey by Vicki Myron (with Brett Witter) is a very heartwarming true story of a cat who lived in the Spencer Public Library for almost two decades (1987-2006). Myron who was the Librarian/Director, found a little kitten in the drop-box on a cold winter day and gave it a home in the Library. The staff aptly named him 'Dewey Readmore Books'. Dewey became the resident cat who connected with the library patrons, young and old. His cat's instincts about the needs of the people around him endeared him to all and his fame grew both locally and internationally (a film crew came from Japan to make a documentary on him!)

The author also shares some of her personal story and the stories of the town of Spencer and the state of Iowa. The chapters are interesting with anecdotes that make you smile. But be prepared to get 'dewey eyed' or cry a little when the story of the Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World ends. Myron has followed up Dewey (published in 2008) with Dewey's Nine Lives, but I have yet to read this second book.
